Krept and Konan - Dunya (Brotherhood official soundtrack) Video Analysis
This is the third music video I'll be analysing. This song is made by Krept and Konan who are well known artist in the UK coming from south London.
The song is a soundtrack for the film brotherhood and the word 'Dunya' is an Arabic word meaning for world but people in the younger generation know this word for meaning hood. The song is sending a message out to the people in general but also those with authority to do something about what is really going on with black Afro Caribbeans and the police whereas many have been killed without a proper explanation. So The duo Krept and Konan address this issue in the music video through acting & turning the situation the opposite way.
Mise en scene

The main location that is used in this video to send this message is the streets of London. The men that are in uniform of a police officer have more authority than the the other two men (Krept and Konan) that are in casual clothing and this is nothing unusual as they are police but in the scene of them stopping Krept and Konan the police man abuses his authority and ends up using his gun, as he apparently thinks he has a weapon. This addresses the issues with police carrying guns in the United States especially especially. Later on in the music video there are people walking around with a David Cameron mask on intimidating the police man and he does nothing and people kept on giving the police man trouble example in the shop.

EditingAs the song starts the cutting rate of the song is fast this could be because it is a story telling song but these cuts have a varitie as the cuts slow down when the story (narrative) acting comes on it slows down but when the music starts the cuts start to speed up but significantly the beat does not always cut according to the lip syncing as it sometimes acts a background music while the artists are acting. Even though the lyrics ain't about the story being told only the chorus is but the some of the scenes still consist a story within a song so it is constantly changing from krept and konan to the policeman keeping the audience also intrigued with the story but also the song. The pace of the video is slow when they instrumental is playing only but as soon as the artist start rapping their verse it goes faster to keep up with the song. There's another blackout when Krept and Konan shoot the police then after the blackout there was a fast cut to the policeman and he woke up like it was a dream, this makes the audience feel tension also creates deeper connotations that he does not want to be in that position and the blackout empathises this assumption. The cutting is selective as there are parts of the story that create tension and suspense but it then gets cut back into the performing part of the music video rather than acting as it makes the audience more eager creates greater reason to keep the audience reading which is a method of intriguing the audience in narrative music videos.

Camera
In the scene where krept and konan get stopped by the police there is a establishing shot, showing where they are. There's a mid shot as soon as the police stop the two young men you see krept (with long hair) sigh in distress, the way he directs his head and his body posture show that he may get this a lot & all these connotations are shown through this mid shot. There's a reverse shot reverse as konan struggles with the other police man as the police man pulls out the gun there's a mid shot looking up at the angle konan was on the floor then a close shot showing konan's face in shock, then as he shoots the gun a blackout effect is used along with the sound, this creates suspense. Also the camera work creates 'pure reality' (Goodwin) most especially at the beginning of the song when the tv is on and they are listining to the news about what is going on in america which the camera does a shot reverse shot to show 'krepts' facial expression which he looks disgusted by and these estblishing shots set the mode of the story as you expect these act that they saw on Tv to happen. Also some mid shots at the beginning are aesthetically pleasing to the male audience as it sexualises the women as they are half naked this is another aspect of 'pure reality' as it convey's the rapper's life.

Krept and Konan getting annoyed.

Target audience
The target audience for 'Dunya' is grime fans even though the instrumental has a piano sound the artist are originally grime artist. Also the target audience are people who have an issue as they feel that police abuse their power as this is addressed throughout the song. Generally the age for this video are young adults.

Ideas I could use from video

  • Create a video on polictical correctness (race)
  • Use of narrative throughout the video but not as much speech
  • Cutting rate varieties ( constant changes)
  • Apply attire with genre (urban fashion with grime/rap genre)

Media Studies A2 Preparatory Task Research for Advanced Portfolio Part 2

Drake Find your loving Video analysis

This is the second music videos I will be analysing. The song is made by Drake who is a very well known artist who comes from Canada.
Short Narrative of song
This song has a story line which is drake being in Jamaica and seeing a women that he ends up in love with, they start dating go beach together and spend time together but this becomes very problematic as she has a boyfriend which is a part of a gang & one of them saw Drake talking to the girl. Drake ignores that because of how strong his feelings were about her he was warned by the old man in the introduction to the video before the song actually started but he also ignored that. Drake goes on a quest looking for the girl he has fallen in love with but when he does find where she lives he bumps into her boyfriend and his gang.

Themes
Romance - The song is about love
Trouble - The extent that drake went for his love even though it brought trouble
Gangs - The video shows how gangs can be very troublesome
Girls - The video shows how girls can get you into trouble

Mise en scene
The music video is situated in Jamaica which is in the Caribbean. In the video drake is in a late night club when he notices the women he ends up falling in love with but one of her boyfriend's friends see her talking to drake. Then in the next scene we see a group who are on motorbikes with mask this gives us an insight on the type as they are wearing mask and are riding late at night which suggest they are a gang. Also because of the area which looks very undeveloped and poor it is exposed to gang culture which makes sense to why all the way through the video it is constantly dark scenes which is the opposite to what love symbolises and this represents a sad romance. The lighting in the music video sets a very significant as the lighting from the party scene which is a dark colourful scene consist throughout as the darkness of the scenes creates connotations of trouble for drake. Also the attire accommodates the location which is less urban western wear and is more urban Caribbean culture wear due to the weather and drake's genre of song uses a beat which would be classified with Jamaican music culture. The props they may have been used for this music video may have been a handheld gimbal to keep the camera steady when moving it which creates professionalism as i want my music video to be as advanced and professional I will use a tripod.

  Camera

In the video there are many close shots this could be because of the type of song it is. The close shots in this video is used to express emotion these two images clearly show the differences in emotions. The first close shot of drake shows fear this is clear from the way drake has opened his mouth which expresses he is in fear but also in shock as at that part of the scene when he finds the girls house but behind him was her boyfriend and his gang.

The second close shot connotation's shows Drake's face in anger and jealousy this is when he sees the girl he is in love with, with her boyfriend. Throughout the scene the camera is telling the audience a story while the song plays but it also seems as if at time Drake is having flashbacks of him being and seeing the woman, example when he is having a conversation with the old man.

Editing

The music video for 'Find your love' by drake has loads of scenes this is because it tells a story within the video without it being narrated by the song as drake is not explaining what is going on but the video does. The video is very selective with the cuts as the scenes go on with the song and the story is being told the cutting rate changes constantly from fast pace to slow pace example of this is when the gang appear behind drake and there is a reverse shot reverse this empathises the tension. Also the lighting in the club enhances the club the cuts create a set mode for the rest of the video which the colour correction does not change significantly. There is no fixed cutting rate there is constant change to the pace as the song is not cutting towards the beat and this may be due to the narrative story telling music video and the music stops when the acting starts and when it starts the cutting does not sync with the beat. This could influence my music video if i do the same genre which is hip hop because if it is a narrative music video I did not have to keep linking the beat with the cutting rate.

Target audience

The target audience for 'Find your love' is anyone who can relate to the genre of the music also can empathise how far they will go for the people they love and the effort they show. This song is targeted to both males and females this is because of it is affectionately appealing to both genders who go to the extra extent for their lovers, Also the genre of the song is R&B but with a Jamaican beat which matches the location the video was shot at.

Ideas I could use in my own video

- Making the video be a narrative (telling a story with good camera work and angles creating connotation with shot angles)
- Close shots showing connotations of emotion
- Selective cuts creating connotations throughout the scenes
- Cutting rate going with song
- Loads of scenes making it interesting as it is not predictable.

Media Studies A2 Preparatory Task Research for Advanced Portfolio Part 1

In this task i will be analysing the two music videos. This is one of them, the song is made by a music group called WSTRN and the song is called IN2. They are a music group who are from West London with this song doing really good they made a video already but as the song became commercial they made a new one which is produced more professionally as the song became a big hit.

Themes
Girls -The song is generally about girls.                                                                 Competition- The song talks about how the other boys aren't better than them.
Love- They make the song have a vibe but as they are talking about girls it suggest love and shows positive and the fun to it as the video seems like the artist are having fun themselves.
Young Boys - They just want to have fun nothing serious.

 Camera, Editing, Mise en scene

In the music video there are many different camera angles which express how much fun they were having while making the video making the video look more abstract. In this scene it is a low angle shot with  the artist dancing and having fun which also relates to the theme of the song which is having fun as young men. There is constantly changes in the shot angles and the zoom changes frequently as well, it shows that there exploring in all different camera techniques to make the video have the vibe but also abstract feeling even though the song is about girls, this is why it makes it abstract because it is not the normal romantic song/video about girls. The mid-shots, long shots and close shots of the women actors show us their emotion and the actors are smiling which go with the theme of having fun and being happy also it supports the good stereotype of young women being innocent and just wanting to enjoy life but with other young men but the close shot of the women smiling innocently and dancing creates an image showing fragility of women. The makes a relationship with the male and female artist as they are not together but when the artist is rapping they make sure the audience know it is directed to the women actors as it cuts to them,

Editing - Animation in this song is constant which makes it more appealing to the target audience and makes it have that fun and abstract look also but it isn't animated in a fictional way as it is  still in the real world . Cuts in this music video is very frequent as it goes with the beat and the video has a lot of scenes which makes it more intriguing to the audience. This video has not got a set pace but it changes for the chorus as it is a slow chorus but when the artist are rapping the pace gets faster and so does the cutting rate. Also the time allocated is to the artist is mostly on them as they are new artist which makes us get familiar to the artist as they aren't dressed up as acts but are themselves.

Mise en scene - The video was made in west London reasoning with the artist themselves as that is where they come from also their group id called WSTRN which  they made it short for western. The video is not the most glamorous and romantic video about women which makes it more able for their target audience to relate it to which is young teenagers all the way to young adults. The colour of the video is not neutral it is black and white the whole way through but the animation makes it more interesting.

Target audience - The song 'IN2' is targeted to a wide range of audience with the genre being hip hop and the United kingdom being diverse with song choices there isn't a specific audience for this song but if there has to be one it is fans of hip hop.

What I could include in my music video

  •  I could use the abstract theme with loads of colours
  • I could use the wide varieties of shot types to create different connotations
  • The use cutting with the beat which links with Goodwin's theory about the cutting rate suiting the beat.
  • The of themes such as black and white which is edited onto the video and kept throughout the scenes and this sorts out the colour correction of scenes.
